Gurucharan College’s English Department Commemorates Stalwart Educationists.

On 20th September 2021, the faculty and staff of the department of English, Gurucharan College, conducted a memorial meeting for two recently departed ex professors of the department, Dr. Partha Sarathi Chanda and Dr. Jahar Kanti Sen.

The recent demise of Dr. Jahar Kanti Sen has left the whole educational fraternity of Barak Valley in a state of mourning. Dr. Sen was retired Vice-Principal of Gurucharan College, and an eminent educationist of Barak Valley. Dr. P. S. Chanda also was principal in-charge of Gurucharan College when he retired. Both men were renowned names and had been colleagues at the Department of English in Gurucharan College for many years.

The people present in the meeting included the head of the department of English, Dr. Panthapriyo Dhar, Mrs. Vandana Thousen, Mr. Mehdi Hasan Choudhury, Dr. Arjun Chaudhuri, Dr. Moynul Haque and others. A citation was read out in the memory of the departed souls of P. S. Chanda and Dr. J. K. Sen. All the present members of the department of English recounted their time spent with the now departed professors.

Dr. J. K. Sen, the citation read “in his own inimitable way, was a person like no other. His vast knowledge of literature and literary cultures, as well as of the primary principles of education remains till date something one can only aspire to. His command over the English language, his intense fervour for the betterment of his students, and his dedicated professorship at Gurucharan College from 1967 till 2004 have all become legendary in the annals of Barak Valley’s history.”

About Dr. P. S. Chanda, the citation was equally generous in its praise and expression of gratitude. It also made mention of the departed Partha Sarathi Chanda’s personal interest in the art of debating. Many of the people present made statements of their studentship under the Principalship of Dr. P. S. Chanda.

The meeting ended with the observance of a two minute silence in the memory of the departed souls. This was organised on behalf of the Department of English of Gurucharan College. All necessary protocols of distancing and disinfection were maintained duly. The meeting took place in the premises of the college itself.

Notably, Dr. J. K. Sen had drawn his last breath on the 7th of September 2021. His mortal remains had been brought to Gurucharan College’s campus for many people from the academic fraternity to pay their respects to. Representatives from all colleges of Silchar were present on that day, and presented floral tributes to the mortal remnants of Dr. Sen.
