Assam: 6.7 Magnitude Earthquake, 6 Aftershocks Jolt NE, Widespread Damages.

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter Scale jolted Assam and several other parts of Northeast today morning. Six aftershocks of magnitude 3.2 to 4.7 were recorded over the 2 hours and 30 minutes after the first quake shook up the region.

According to the National Centre of Seismology, the earthquake originated in 36 km west-northeast of Assam’s Tezpur and tremors were felt even in North Bengal and other parts of the Northeast.

A road in Sonitpur that was the epicentre of the earthquake has developed a crack while several buildings and walls in the area were damaged.
