The Assam Rifles apprehended a Manipuri insurgent from Bishnupur district of Manipur on 13 January 2021. The Manipuri insurgent belongs to the United National Liberation Front (UNLF), a designated terrorist organisation operating in north east India.
The apprehended cadre was an over ground worker of the UNLF, informed the Assam Rifles. The UNLF has remained as one of the most dreaded terrorist organisations of north east for the last 54 years.
On Thursday, the Assam Rifles informed about the apprehension of the Manipuri insurgent through a tweet. The official twitter handle of the Assam Rifles tweeted, “Intelligence-based joint operation by Assam Rifles and Manipur police on 13 January 2021 led to the apprehension of an OGW of UNLF faction from Tera Urak Industrial Estate, Bishnupur district.”
They added, “The recoveries include one .32 mm pistol, live rounds and IED preparation material.” The terrorist was later handed over to the Manipur police. The UNLF was founded in the year 1964. It was formed with the aim of creating a sovereign and socialist Manipur. The organisation was, however, banned by the Indian government for their armed violence. As per the data of 2005, the organisation has 2000 active cadres in Manipur. The current head of the UNLF is Rajkumar Meghen (Sana Yaima).
